WTA Scholarship Program for 2008
Sponsored by WTA & Rural Mutual Insurance Company & Scott Construction, Inc.

For the 23rd year, Wisconsin Towns Association, in conjunction with Rural Mutual Insurance Company, carrier for the Association’s endorsed insurance program, and Scott Construction, Inc. will be awarding $7,500 in scholarships to the winners of an essay contest to high school seniors graduating in 2008 from either a public or private high school in Wisconsin, who plan to enroll in a Wisconsin public or private college or vocational college.  The seven scholarships will be awarded on the basis of an essay contest.  Details of the essay contest are provided in the 2008 Scholarship Brochure and summarized on this website.  For a copy of the printed brochure or more information please call the Wisconsin Towns Association office at (715) 526-3157.

Rural Mutual Insurance Company, Wisconsin Towns Association and-Scott Construction, Inc. will offer-the following scholarships to the-winners of an essay contest. The scholarships will be awarded-on the following basis:

 

Two (2) $1,250 scholarships will be awarded, one each to the highest ranking boy and highest-ranking girl winners from a member town or-village whose municipality has Rural Mutual-Insurance Company coverage for their-government as of May 1, 2008.

 

Four (4) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded, one each to two boys and two girls.

 

One (1) $1,000 scholarship to either a boy or a-girl who has the highest ranking below the-previous four scholarships.

 

All applicants must complete and be judged on an essay contest as described in this brochure. All applicants must be graduating from a Wisconsin public or private high school in 2008 and plan to attend a Wisconsin based public or private college or vocational technical institute. The two $1,250 winners may be among the five other scholarship winners.

 

All winners will be determined by an independent judging of an essay contest as described below.

Scholarship Essay Requirements

1. Entrants must prepare an essay addressing the-following topic: “What should town government do to-lead Wisconsin through the 21st Century?”-

2. The typewritten essay should be between 500 and 1000 words long and double spaced.

3. The completed essay should be mailed to:

It must be postmarked no later than May 27, 2008.

 

4. Be sure to include a bibliographic listing of sources used to obtain the subject material.

5. The applicant must be a 2008 graduate of a Wisconsin public or private high school, who plans to enroll in a Wisconsin public or private college or vocational technical institute in 2008.

 

Additional Information:

The 2005-06 Wisconsin Statutes in particular, Chapters 60, 61, 62, & 66 provide current-information on the functions and authority of local-government in Wisconsin.-The essays will be judged-independently on-originality and subject-matter in relationship to-the topic. The essays-must also contain correct-spelling and punctuation.-

Students do not need to be residents of towns.  We welcome residents of villages and cities to submit essays. 

The submission deadline requires the essays be received or postmarked by May 27, 2008 and the judging will be-completed by August 15,-2008.-

Successful recipients are encouraged to attend the 2008 Wisconsin Towns Association Convention-Banquet on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Paper-Valley Hotel in Appleton Wisconsin.

 

Proof of enrollment in a college or institute of higher-education will be required to receive a scholarship. A-waiver will be allowed for students unable to enroll-until the second semester following high school-graduation.
