Protect our investment in Wisconsin's state/local
road system
by adequately funding improvement and maintenance activities
Over 61,000 miles of Wisconsin's 110,000 mile state/local road
system are owned and maintained by towns. Town roads form a vital, statewide economic
resource that must be maintained and improved on a regular basis. Yet towns and other
local governments must rely primarily on property taxes and special assessments to pay for
these facilities. These tax sources do not relate directly to the benefits provided by
roads. The state, by contrast, collects motor fuel taxes that bear a direct relationship
to usage. Therefore, it makes sense for the state to continue to support local
transportation costs.
Responsible Road Building Priorities: State and local officials should
work together closely to provide a balanced transportation system that promotes economic
development, public safety and responsible use of environmental resources.
Thank You: Town official thank state government for
past increased local road aids, which allow local governments to maintain a quality road system
without unduly burdening property taxpayers.
Effective Infrastructure Management: Towns support the use of new
information technologies, including mandatory local road inventory/rating systems and
networked reporting systems to improve quality and minimize costs if these systems are
designed with local government input and are funded.
